The Stormwater BMP (Best Management Practice) Maintenance Task Committee is under the Stormwater Infrastructure Committee, which is part of the Water, Wastewater & Stormwater Council under the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
To further the current state of knowledge pertaining to operation and maintenance of structural stormwater best management practices (BMPs). The BMPs investigated will include: extended detention basins, wet ponds, stormwater wetlands, sand filters, bioretention, vegetated filter strips, and wet/dry swales (See Joint WEF/ASCE-EWRI Manual of Practice 87, Design of Urban Stormwater Controls). The committee will seek input from engineers, designers, landscape architects, contractors, facility managers, and property owners. Further, the scope of the committee will be to enhance design methodologies to allow for efficient, regular, and effective maintenance and to provide contractors and owners with cost effective techniques to manage their stormwater infrastructure. This task committee is committed to furthering ASCE's sustainable principles (Policy Statement 418).
May 23, 2012: Committee members presented a paper entitled, Operation and Maintenance Assessment for Structural Stormwater BMPs, at the ASCE EWRI 2012 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The paper provides a description of the committee's activities and summarizes the results of their research, to date.
